I can't believe I've stuck with this - although somewhat irregularly - for a year. I think I sort of met some of my goals...but the real news is that now I have new ones.

When I started, I wanted to stay at $750 a month (which is a shocking $9000 a year) and I did do that, coming under by $1400 for the year. But now my goal is to not spend that much on clothes again. I have a lot of stuff, and If I just get one or two designer pieces per season, I can build an awesome wardrobe over time.

I also wanted to spend my money on better clothes, and kick my addiction to Banana Republic. In that respect I've done pretty well. Barely shopped at Banana at all this year and have added some nice pieces from Kate Spade, DVF, Tracy Reese and Phillip Lim to my wardrobe. However, I do think I mostly relied on cheaper mainstream clothes. I still couldn't bring myself to by an item over $400. It just seemed toooooo expensive. But I was still spending the money, so I should have been stricter about the pieces I added.

Finally, I wanted to discover my own style and on that count I think was a big success. When you have to record what you wear everyday, you tend to mix it up. I also found my self shopping for more color and prints, and hitting up Anthropologie, which I used to consider too quirky for me.

For 2011 I have new goals.

First, I'm saving to buy an apartment, so clothes seem a little less important to me now. My money needs to be going to creating a home for myself.

Second, when I DO buy something, it's going to be something I LOVE, that FITS and that GETS ME COMPLIMENTS. I'm also going to apply that rule to my clothes when I put them away after winter - anything that doesn't fit those criteria is gone.

And the ultimate goals: Get down to one fricken' closet and own a classic Chanel tweed suit. Hey, a girl can dream.

Looks like I've slimmed down a little in most categories - although the jeans number is confusing because I remember buying one pair of jeans - not six. But that's what's in my closet.

In a few categories - like purses and shoes - I kinda evened out. I got rid of a lot, but it looks like I purchased right back up.

I need to start applying Peter Walsh's clothing principles to my closet asap.

Well, here I am at the end of the year and it's time to see how much I spent, and what I spent it on. I estimated that I spent $15,000 on clothes in 2009, and my goal was to spend half that this year, or less. Let's see how I did.

Since it's for two months, I have 10 items here. Again, it's getting harder to get rid of stuff, but since I had Peter Walsh's anti-clutter show on in the background so I was inspired. He says you should only have three types of clothes in your closet:

1) Clothes you LOVE
2) Clothes that fit you now
3) Clothes that garner you compliments.

I think that's brilliant - if I followed those criteria strictly, I'm sure another 3rd of my closest would go out the door. I'm certainly going to apply them in the future.

This represents at least $1000 worth of clothes. Some got a LOT of wear, some none at all. I'm sure I'll miss none of it now that it's gone.

I was really good in November. I only bought things I needed and loved so it was a good month for me. I've gotten a lot of wear out of everything thus far and I know it will still be around at least 2-3 years, if not more.

I also spent $100 on body basics at Gap Body. I've always loved their intimates, and they have launched a great sport/fitness line that's very Stella McCartney.

I got this cute dress for next to nada (just $70) at Urban Outfitters.I paired it with tights and boots and the FABULOUS Michael Kors purse I got for Christmas. (Was $348, but now on sale for $243 if you want one.) I love this look because it feels rather 70's which is totally back in. I for one am glad to say bye bye to the 8-'s trends that have been everywhere for the past few years.

It's still cold out, but, with the help of a sleeping bag coat I was able to wear a skirt today without worrying about freezing to death. Long puffy coats are not flattering but boy do they work!

So this is my first wear of the Kate Spade bird shirt. Since it's 80 below zero out I layered it with a brown turtleneck, but maybe that looks a little frumpy? I'm going to try it next tucked into a patterned skirt with navy as the main color to do that whole "mixed prints" look. Wish me luck!

This is my new Tracy Reese dress and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Her stuff is just fabulous. This was $365, but I've already worn it twice and plan to wear it for New Year's Eve. I also think that if I switch up the belt, this will be a nice summer dress to wear to a wedding or something. The style is a little bit 50s, and when anything has a vintage look it's likely to not go out of style. THIS is a great example of how I should be shopping - a high quality spurge that pays for itself!

Part of me feels I should go for it - thanks to Chanel tweed jackets never go out of style! - but the other part of me still can't get over the price.

Would you believe "in a coma"? I wouldn't either. Truth be told it's just been work and the business of life getting in the way of my blogging lately. And I was actually home sick all last week so it would have been pictures of me in mismatched pajamas with greasy hair and a bright red nose.

This outfit was from one of the days when I wasn't deathly ill, and though simple, I like it. Plus I think it makes me look skinny. I've eaten so badly these last few weeks that next year's blog should be about doubling my wardrobe by dropping some pounds! Then all of my pants will fit!

Last Week's Wardrobe!

I was taking the pictures...just had zero time to post due to work. All of these outfits seem a little blah in retrospect. And it's certainly nothing new. Am I failing at my challenge? Or are these just comfy work clothes.

Also - the horse dress is not that unflattering. Just the angle - never shoot up!

Going through my closet this week I decided to take a look at my jeans situation. I feel like I only wear three pairs and can't really fit into the rest, but on further examination, I found that that isn't really true.

The first photo is the array of jeans I have that I can fit into. Two pairs of Hudsons, a pair of skinny Sevens, a pair of Joe's, two Banana Republic skinnys, on pair of gap boyfriend jeans, one pair of American apparel skinnys in black, and a slouchy pair of Citizen's of Humanity that feel like pajamas.

The second photo is the jeans I don't fit in. A worn in pair of Seven's I love, A pair of Banana Republic skinnys in the next smallest size down, That pair of Paige Premium's that still haunt me, a pair of Lucky's that look great when I can put them on, and I added in the Banana Republic navy chinos I bought too tight in the hopes of losing a few lbs.

I wonder what would happen if I could actually lose the inches it would take to get into the photo two jeans. Something to ponder as I make my New Year's resolutions perhaps. i can't seem to let go of these jeans though so they're not going into the donate pile.

In the meantime - I'm not buying anymore jeans for a while. It's no fun trying tthem on anyway.

New Skirt!

This morning started out a little funky in the outfit department. I was determined to wear this outfit...but with navy tights. You can't see it in the photo that well, but these are my olive green tights. My closet is actually clean and organized right now, and I look in all of the places I thought hey could possibly be in, but to no avail. My only thought is that Paddy, my evil little poodle, has eaten and completely digested them.

New Coat!

Fall is in full swing and I realized I didn't really have a mid-weight coat. Just a trench coat, and then straight to puffers. I found this cute little plaid number at Zara for only $140. It has a full cut, which I like since I can wear heavier sweaters under it. It's also very wooly and warm. I think it was a good buy.

October Donations

Here are my October donations - I actually gave a pair of boots and a dress that I never wear to a friend of mine, but since I didn't take a picture I'm holding myself to five items.

First - a black skirt that I last wore in 2001. Yes, 2001. Nearly 10 years in the closet without a wear. It's Banana Republic - one of my early forays before my total clothing dependancy set in.

Next is a grey suit that I bought 3 years ago for a halloween costume. I never wear suits to work and unless I'm an extra on Law and Order someday, I don't see needing it.

Then an olive tank from Banana Republic that has a satin detailing on the front that scrunched up in the wash. now it looks childish.

The striped cardigan is ok, but I don't love it. Really probably too young for me, and not a key piece in my wardrobe.

Finally, had to toss the "somebody in California loves me" tee. Goes against my policy of not wearing ironic t-shirts.

Saturday Night Cozy.

I went out to my favorite place Saturday (Esperanto!) and was wanting a cozy casual look. After all it's a little cold out and I walked there. This fit the bill for me, but the photo is not flattering at all. The angle is a little high, so I look a LOT wider than I did in person - at least I hope so.

I have to say I really do enjoy wearing one color head to toe. I wanted to do a bright shoe but it would have required navy knee socks, which I do not have. The sweater is a new purchase from Zara and I love it. Super simple but a great thickness and texture.

Terrible Tuesday

The outfit isn't terrible, but the day sure has been. I'm just laughing in this shot to mask the tears. Kidding...but I'll be happy when this week is over for sure.

Pulled out a blouse I haven't worn in a while and remembered that I hadn't because I wanted to get it altered. It really needs those little hooks sewn into the shoulder that attach to your bra to keep it in place. I think most dresses and blouses should have this feature, but it's only about $5 to add at a tailor and well worth it. Otherwise this top slides off one shoulder and is a little more "date night" than office appropriate.

This dress is probably 4 years old and I still wear the hell out of it every winter. It's an I.N.C. dress from Macy's that I bought for about $60. Normally I'm not a fan of I.N.C. as their materials are poor and tend to make even the cutest items look cheap and hang poorly, but this dress seems to be the exception to the rule. It's also super easy to wear - just add tights and boots and you're out the door!

After a super long (and much needed) vacation in Bali, I'm back to NYC and my blog. It was odd getting dressed today. For the last 10 days I've worn a cotton dress or romper, flip flops, no make up and a ponytail. Now I'm in 45 degree weather instead of 85 and I had to get dressed...in layers. As I posted this photo today I realized the outfit is almost identical to the last one I posted. We are creatures of habit aren't we?

The weather is holding in the 60s so I threw on a basic outfit this morning that I knew would be cozy. I'm a little under the weather today so couldn't bother getting too fancy. Maybe tomorrow I'll be feeling better. This isn't so bad though. And I got a compliment on the blanket sweater.

Thursday Luncheon

I took these photos before heading out for dinner - so they're not the greatest. I did one with flash and one without so you get the idea. This is my first wearing of my blanket sweater from Express. They are supposed to be a top trend this Fall/Winter and I love anything big and cozy so I'm pretty happy. And the navy sequined tank dressed it up for night. It was a great purchase - it gets tons of wear. And, if you haven't noticed, I'm already back to my fall winter staple: skinny jeans and boots. Hopefully this season I'll learn to mix it up.

Mixing up the patterns.

Since yesterday's outfit was a little streamlined, I decided to be bold today. i am not great at mixing patterns and prints, but I think I'm learning. I just got this sweater at Urban Outfitters yesterday, and I wanted to wear it today, but decided to make myself do something different. I think it looks good, but I'm not 100% confident. The cream stripes in the sweater seem a little too light? But maybe I'm over thinking it.

I swear these pants are so not me but I just love them. Today I pared them with a new silk top I got from Express in the style du jour: military. I'm really happy with it. Feels simple and sophisticated and on trend. And my inner voice is not chirping that the pants make me look fat. I can't really explain my love for these pants. They may not even be flattering, but I'm blinded! I think the gold accessories are essential to this look so I went bigger on those.

Rules are Made to be Broken!

Kim and I decided that October 1st was the absolute soonest you could break out the tights, but today I just felt like it.
Although to be honest, part of it had to do with the top. My latest rule is that nothing new goes in the closet until I wear it. I bought this top on September 2nd and 20 days later it was still sitting there. I'm still glad I bought it. It's a flattering basic and - although it's hard to see in the picture - it has sequin details on the shoulders.

It's official - fall is officially here. I realized this when I pulled out my skinny jeans this morning. Going through old posts I admit I wore them way too much last winter. I'm going to have to get creative this year. Hopefully we'll have a bit of an indian summer so I won't be forced into them this soon!

Pretty standard outfit today. I was really missing the eggplant wedges that Paddy ate a few months ago. They were so versatile and will be hard to replace. Boo, chewy puppies!

Someone commented that I should return these pants and I thought about it, but I'm soooooo glad I didn't! I love these. Not my best photo, but the pants are great. They are loose and well made and the taper at the end is perfect. I feel very chic in them.

The fact that i even bought them was pretty out of character. I pulled them off the rack at the last minute and figured I try them on at home. Normally I wouldn't even look at pants like these for fear they'd make my butt look too big. But they don't, so I'm chalking this experience up to Risk = Reward.

Since they are a new shape for me, I'm looking forward to creating different looks for them. Yay!

Monday - Black and Brown?

I've never really been 100% sure these two go together. I mean black and kakhi, sure...but black and dark brown? This morning I thought I'd experiment and give it a shot. Plus I wanted to wear my new black pants! Upon seeing this photo I have a couple of misgivings.

1) I wish I had worn different heels. I have a pair of brown and cream zebra striped Kate Spade shoes that would have been awesome.
2) I wish the detail on my belt buckle was gold tone instead of nickel.

Other than that I'm good with this outfit. Maybe it's a little boring, but it certainly makes me look skinny.

These purchases all felt necessary. I was sure I needed black wedges, but I haven't worn them yet. Partly because of the ankle. (Boo to my lack of coordination.) The sandals were to replace two well worn pairs and have gotten a lot of use. And the black pants I did need - haven't found a pair I've liked in years and I have these on today. They'll be a nice alternative to jeans.

Ok - here's what I gave up in August. White dress from Banana Republict that I thought was cute but made me look matronly in photos.

Black pants from Banana Republic in a SIZE FOUR that I have never fit into and never worn - purchased under the "I'm going to lose 5 pounds" delusion.

Green tank from the Gap what was just super unflattering to my arms, my stomach, my everything.

Black Banana Republic Dress that was too tight to wear to work and too conservative to wear out.

Three pairs of flops - the blue ones from Earth shoes are downright ugly, and the two pairs from Banana Republic have just seen better days and are not so in style any more.

August lesson: Stop shopping at Banana Republic. The stuff does not stand the test of time!!!

Friday I went shopping with Kim at a little boutique on 9th Street called Pinky Otto. I found this adorable navy and white dot jumper that was 50% off and Kim convinced me to get it. I'm SO glad I did because i think it's adorable and it was perfect for going dancing that evening. No two pieces in the store were alike and they were all the Pinky Otto brand so I feel like I won't see this on anyone else. Plus it's a fashion risk for me, but I really loved it once I got it on.

Happy Four Day Weekend! Today I was going for a casual look with a military vibe. The navy sequin tank is new and I love, love, love it. The brown strap you're seeing is a crossbody bacg that should have been in the shot but wasn't. Oh well.

What makes this military? Basically the color scheme, the avatiors and the fit. Military looks best when it's not loose and flowy. What you want to look like is maybe you just helicoptered into some kind of foreign crisis but with a touch of glam. I think this would have been a LOT better if the pants had been more of that military green. These kinda verge on brown. Still works but not as good. I'm on the hunt for a good pair of army green pants. I think this fall they'll be a key piece.

Baby's First Fedora

I am generally not a trendy person. I'd describe my look as more classic with some edge (or at least trying to be) and I hate to buy stuff that will go out of style with the season. I'm sure you've seen fedoras EVERYWHERE because lord knows I have, and I've been trying to fight it.

However - while strolling through Nolita this weekend I stumbled upon this unique gem from a street vendor specializing in hats. The top is wool lace, it has a fabric band and a tweed brim. I've never seen another like it. I also thought the material would take it into fall and winter. I didn't want to get a straw one and put it away in 30 days. I really like it, but it definitely tested my confidence walking around with it this morning. I kept worrying that I looked stupid, but that's stupid. This is New York, I can get away with (fashion) murder.

Would love any and all opinions on this trend and this hat.

Right now I'm going to put it on and head to lunch. Eek!

Took Saturday's top and tried to re-do it for day. Added a gold belt and went with brown shoes. Also tried a different shape of jean. These bootcut seem to balance the top better, but I think the top is pretty blousy, so it's always going to me look a little fuller. I still love it though, and people do compliment it so I'm glad I bought it.

Last Friday, on my way home from work, I stopped at Anthropologie and shopped without regard to anything! I have to say - after months of restraint it felt pretty good. I'm very happy with all of the pieces I got, and this top is one of them. I wore this out Saturday night and felt pretty good if I do say so myself. I will say though, upon seeing this photo, that the skinny jeans may not have been the best way to go. Boot cut might have made a better (and by better I mean less like I have a giant ass) silhouette. Still - love the color, love the cut and happy I bought it.

This dress came super close to going in the "toss" pile. It's cute, but somehow it feels too much? Like a goth swiss miss, or a maid in cancun? I never quite know if the pattern is too overwhelming. Well, I gave it one last shot and got lots of compliments - from "cute dress" to "you look skinny." So, maybe it is a keeper? What do you guys think?

The shoes were a last resort - at this point I still have not found black wedges to wear to work and I REALLY did not like wearing flats with this. I WILL find wedges this week. It's getting ridiculous.

I have to be straight with you people. this is getting really hard! I only bought one item in July and dumping FIVE was difficult. Part of it is that I STILL haven't lost those 5-10 pounds, so I'm hoping to get back in to a lot of my unwearable stuff. The other part of it is that I feel like I've eliminated a lot, but haven't found great replacements. I've been out of shopping mode but fall styles are here so I'm going ot get back on it and get some nice pieces. Here are the rejects:

White silk blouse with black applique from Urban Outfitters - I like this top but in every photo I've taken of it it is UNflattering.

Cute striped Tee from Fred Segal - I love this shirt but it is waaaaay too tight and makes me look rolly. Of course the label says One size fits all because I got it in LA where everyone weighs 90 lbs.

Monday's Summer Dress

I slept in an extra 45 minutes this morning so I new it would be a summer dress day. Doesn't require too much though and is comfy and cute. Plus that extra 45 minutes was sooooo worth it.

Today I'm wearing a dress I picked up last summer at Urban Outfitters for $90. It's still cute and graphic, but I think that color block is on it's way out. This may be my last summer in this dress. Simple gladiators (Enzo Angiolini, $69) complete the outfit and I grabbed my black cardigan from The Limited ($50) for a cover up in my freezing office. Hope it doesn't look too frumpy like last time.

What do you think...should I retire the color block?

I'm so glad I pulled this dress out of the closet today. The last time I considered wearing this was to a Fourth of July party but I put it on and felt frumpy. Today I promised to try something new so I put it on and was determined to let my readers decide.

Well, I got my first compliment within 5 minutes of walking out the door from a chic woman walking her dog on the street. Followed by several compliments from folks at work. I guess it doesn't look frumpy after all. This will definitely stay in my closet and out of the Goodwill pile. The best part of all - I got it at Target! Gotta love that place!

I swear this dress is one of my best purchases this year. You can throw it on in 2 seconds and look polished and cute, but it's as comfortable as Pajamas. After my trip to Austin this last weekend, I was not up for a big creative closet moment Monday morning so I just pulled this out. Got a few compliments to boot. I am going to invest in a few more of these just to preserve morning peace of mind.

July Purchases

Yep - you are looking at the right picture. I only bought ONE THING in July. A striped t-shirt for $35 at French Connection.

I was pretty shocked myself, and was wondering how I went from an average of $1000+ last year to $35 this year. I think part of it is the weight gain (who wants to shop when nothing fits?); part of it was the weather (who wants to shop when it's so hot outside that wearing clothes feels like some bizarre form of torture?); but I also think part of it was the fact that I've learned not to shop just for the sake of shopping.

Nothing really caught my eye in July. It's sort of mid season before the fall clothes come out and I don't need any more summer clothes so I just didn't even find myself looking. I'm really happy about this turn of events, and I'm not rolling over the extra $715 of my budget to August - just putting it into savings.

Castoffs will go up tomorrow - it's getting harder!!

Occasionally, I like to try and pick out an outfit that deliberately doesn't have any matching components, but just lives int he same color palette. I really like where I ended up today. Striped tees are pretty in right now, and this one is cream with gray stripes. Skirt is navy, belt is brown, shoes are eggplant, and purse is purple patent leather.

I feel like it looks a little more interesting than a perfectly matched outfit. Keep in mind I was raised in an era where sweaters at Express came with matching socks, so this is a hard habit to break.

Today the heat has let up a little bit and I decided to walk to work so my outfit had to include comfy shoes. I decided on my Trina Turk Silk Chiffon frock. I normally only wear this out to dinner and such, but thought the flats could make it work for day too.

Unfortunately, since it's 30 degrees colder in my office than outside, I had to bring the pink cardigan which really frumps it up. But I can't freeze for fashion - sorry!

Silk Paisley Banana Republic Dress, $80: Put this on a few weeks back and it was so unflattering and comfortable I'm a bit shocked I ever wore it.

Lavender BCBG Cap-Sleeved Top, $120: I've gotten a lot of wear out of this top over the last few years, but when I tried on on in June it felt silly. Like the babydoll cut and the giant buttons made me look like a kid. I got my money's worth out of this so I'm ok to see it go.

Green Silk Banana Republic Tank/Tunic, $50?: I remember buying this on sale and wishing it was in a darker color to work with my skin tone. Why did I still buy it? I have no idea. I've worn this a few times now, but I don't love it or love myself in it, so sayonara!

Still intrigued by the six items or less project. I may try to focus on one category next time to get my five pieces. That's a challenge for sure.

Read about this the other day. A website is challenging people to choose SIX items from their closet and only wear those for 30 days.

Wow! I can't imagine doing that, but people seem to find it very freeing, and surprisingly, not many people in their lives notice. Maybe I could get down to six of each item...six blouses, six skirts, etc. Sounds impossible, but maybe it'd be great. Check out the site.

Depressing Morning - Okay Outfit

Today sucked. I spent an HOUR attempting to find something to wear this morning. None of my cute shorts or capris from last year fit at all. Not even close. I thought I had only gained 5 pounds but I feel like it may be more like 10. I'm smart enough not to try some stupid cleanse or fad diet. I know it's just counting calories and exercising and consistency and patience. Booo.

So, here's where I landed,

Still struggling to find outfits that beat the heat and look cute. This one (I hope) looks better than the photograph. Not my most flattering pose and the hair, ruined by the humidity, is up and messy. Still love this linen skirt though.

Today's Outfit

Like I said...it's hot. Today I pulled out this Club Monaco skirt ($125) that is very forgiving in the waistline so it still fits. Paired it with a simple Banana Republic stretch tee ($$35) and my old Enzo Angiolini gladiators ($69) it makes a pretty simple outfit.

Fashionable? I don't know. I feel like I'm doing better than the girls in cut-off jean shorts, but don't feel as sophisticated and put-together as I'd like.

Thoughts?

I would say I deserve a Time Out, but I've basically taken one for the last few weeks. I had a few things going on in my personal life that derailed me, but fashion-wise it hasn't been a very inspiring July either fro 2 reasons.

First, In the last 2 months or so I have packed on 5-7 pounds. Enough so that some things don't fit, and the things that do fit, barely fit. A lot of my cuter clothes are uncomfortable and look too tight to wear. I usually keep my weight around the same number and use my clothes as a guide, so I know it's time to get back on top of it. Yesterday I began my 2 week jumpstart. Cutting calories, hitting the gym and not drinking. It's going to be hard, but having a closet full of clothes I can't wear is 0.0 fun. Using the iphone app LoseIt and it's fun to play with.

Second, the weather in New York has been miserable. 90+ degrees and humid as hell. All I want to wear is a loose cotton sack, which is not very fashionable. And since we don't have malls here (and the air conditioning that goes with them) shopping is off my radar for now.

BUT...the point is to chronicle what I wear every day and I will get back on the horse. It will be a challenge to find outfits that fit, aren't too hot AND are fashionable, but I started the blog to challenge myself so I need to keep at it.

Onward!

Thursday is my Casual Friday This Week

Happy Hour

This is me at my local, Destination on 13th and A. Today to celebrate being back in NYC I opted for all black. Shirt is Trina Turk stretch cotton with white stitching ($160), skirt is Banana Republic silk chiffon ($75), orange shoes are (surprisingly) Aerosoles ($79). I like this look. I feel New Yorky, which is when i feel my best! Thanks Kim for the great picture!

Business Meeting

Had a client meeting today and needed to be conservative and professional. This blue faux wrap dress by Merona (Target, $40) has done me well over the years. Looking at this picture though I'm wondering if it wouldn't benefit from a slightly shorter hem. What are the rules on hems anyway? I think "they" say just above the knee is the most flattering. I'll have. To look into that.

Added a pop of color with my green, two-tone Marc Jacobs heels ($298). Tried to make my ponytail more professional by wrapping it in an Hermes Twilly scarf ($98).

Tried to do something different today and just ended up looking F.A.T. Ugh.
Full skirt + Full top = Full figured. I really should have known better. Cest la vie, noting I can do about it now.

Today's dress is another easy cotton number to beat the heat. This black dress is by Kimichi Blue and I got it at Urban Outfitters last year for around $80. Shoes are my Enzo Angiolini Gladiators, $89,

I LOVE this dress. It's modest and comfortable, and the neck and sleeves have a little retro flair. Coincidentally, Kim has this dress too.
